One of the main features of the SIG P238 is its small size. The P238 is a very compact pistol. Some people even carry a P238 in their pocket.
If this is your mode of carry, I suggest that you use a quality holster that provides full coverage of the trigger and keeps all objects away from the trigger guard.
Another important feature of the P238 is its classic design. The P238 borrows heavily from the Springfield 1911 design.

The grips on the SIG P238 are as thin as the rest of this rifle. Like the 1911, the P238 has two panels.
Depending on the P238 model you choose will determine what the grips are made of. This particular model sports G10 panels that have an aggressive shape to keep the gun firmly in your hand.

For those unfamiliar, G10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate made by stacking layers of fiberglass soaked in resin, then fired with heat and pressure until the resin sets and you're left with a stiff, lightweight material.
Although the grips are thin, they fit nicely in the hand, and combined with the G10 grips, the P238 doesn't feel like it's going anywhere when shooting.
The angle of the P238 grips is nice and doesn't distort the wrist like some other manufacturers do.
As with the 1911, the P238 has a beavertail to protect the shooter's hand from hammer bites.

Without this feature, the fleshy part of your hand can be pinched and cause bruises or broken skin.
As previously mentioned, the texture found on the grip of the SIG P238 may differ between the submodel you choose.
The model I have is aggressively contoured on the side grip panels and, in addition to this, has an insert on the bottom of the backstrap.
In addition to these improved grip areas, SIG has vertical stripes on the front strap to help control the overall handling of the small framed rifle.

Although subtle, this is a welcome alternative approach, as I believe the aggressive stippling seen on the backstrap and grip panels would be too much in this area.
One area where the SIG SAUER really shines (lol) is in the night vision department. SIG offers a night sight option on all their pistols from the factory.

While this leaves the aftermarket wide open, I believe offering a high quality OEM part is more desirable in this case.

SIG did it again with the P238. The sights on the slide are steel and have three tritium vials that glow in the dark. The bottles are wrapped in white plastic so that scenes are easy to see even during the day.
I find that the square sight post provides the perfect place to make accurate shots but doesn't clutter the sight of the target.
One thing you will be missing is the grip safety. I have never been a fan of this type of safety, but I do not let its presence deter me from owning pistols.
The P238 does just that. The hammer is located at the back of the slide and is skeletonized. The hammer has ridges cut across it to aid in manipulation.

Although the P238 lacks a grip safety, it does have a frame safety.
There are some differences between this safety and the safety found in the 1911. Instead of physically locking with the slide on the outside of the slide, it moves a small plunger on the side of the frame that prevents drop the hammer.
Because of this difference from the traditional 1911 style safety, the slide can be changed while the gun is on the safety.
This means you can unlock the room and still activate the security. This is a big plus in my book.

The slide stop is in a familiar location and functions like a full size 1911.
The slide stop is located in a position on the frame where it is easy to reach by the thumb when the gun is in the shooting grip. The slide stop is only on the left side of the frame.
The slide stop can also be used as a slide release on the P238. The angle and shape on the pad of the slide stop makes it easy to change.
The slide stop doubles as the take-down lever on the SIG P238. It works like a 1911. You must first remove the mag and clear the gun.

Next, press the slide release from right to left and then pull the slide back until it is removed. Once removed the slide moves forward freely and slides out of the guide rails.
Reassembly is a bit difficult as the ejector is spring-loaded and once the slide is removed, it is pushed up and the rear of the slide does not move on its own. You have to push the ejector down so that the slide moves all the way to its rear.
After you reinstall the slide, you need to pull it back so that the pin can be reinserted through the frame and barrel. It's tricky and you can end up with an "idiot scratch" on your frame if you're not careful.
There is also a magazine release at a known location. It has a drawn form and is easy to implement.

The mag release is located on the left side of the rifle and cannot be reversed. It is made of metal and is of medium size.
The magazines of the P238 are constructed of quality stainless steel. Although there is no good flare to speak of, they are easy to insert into the frame of the gun.
The lock emits an audible click when seated, and you also get tactile feedback that the magazine is locked.
The only consideration I have in this area is to keep your little finger clear of the area so as not to interfere with the mag drop. The same can be said of any compact or subcompact firearm.

Surprisingly, the trigger on the SIG P238 is made of polymer. It's an interesting contrast to the high quality components found in this handgun.
