Small Submachine Gun - Reporters and members of the public are getting a chance to get hands-on with Sig Sauer's new ultra-compact MPX Copperhead at the annual SHOT Show firearms trade show in Las Vegas. The company is pitching the gun hard at the U.S. civilian market as the 9mm "pistol," but its selective-fire version should draw interest from military and law enforcement units. It seems to be well suited to the US Army's requirements for a new, much smaller submachine gun.
Germany-headquartered Sig Sauer's American subsidiary first announced the Copperhead on January 7, 2019, but the gun had been in development for several months prior to that. It takes inspiration and incorporates many features from the Rattler, a sub-compact member of the increasingly popular MCX rifle family. Sig Sauer first introduced the MPX 9mm submachine gun in 2015 and now offers those guns with the option of various barrel lengths and an integrated silencer. Additional semi-automatic only legal versions soon appeared on the US civilian market.
The rifles are externally reminiscent of the AR-15/M16 family of rifles, and incorporate design elements from the MCX series that are derived from earlier rifles. But the MPX is a unique weapon.
The standard submachine gun type has an eight-inch barrel and an overall length of less than 17 inches. The current smallest variant, the MPX K, cuts that down further with a barrel of just four and a half inches.

The Copperhead has a three-and-a-half-inch barrel and an overall length of just 14.5-inches. It's shorter than the standard MPX and has a shortened pistol grip, making it easier to conceal in a bag or under a coat. It weighs four and a half pounds, two pounds lighter than the full-size submachine gun version.
The gun is very short, it has a monolithic upper receiver and no separate handguard. The civilian pistol version has a barrel with a flash bath to keep the volume as low as possible. The military and law enforcement version has a more traditional threaded muzzle that allows the user to install a variety of devices, including quick-disconnect systems for sound suppression.
A sub rail on top means the gun can accept different optics. This small, compact, non-magnifying dot or holographic sight makes a lot of sense to quickly aim with a rifle.
The submachine gun version comes with a very low Personal Defense Weapon (PDW)-style folding stock, while the civilian version has a detachable hand brace instead of meeting the US legal definition of a pistol. Both variants had a small accessory rail at the rear to accept any of the side-folding stocks offered by Sig Sauer for the MPX and MCX families.

As mentioned earlier, sales of the MCX, including military and law enforcement features, are increasing. The MPX has also had some sales. So adding an ultra-compact variant could easily increase that market share, especially for units focused on VIP protection and close quarter operations, compact, compact weapon and concealable with a high rate of fire and so on. The MPX already appeared to be a major contender due to the rifle's current features and the US military's increased interest in the weapon and the MCX series of rifles. In July 2018, the military hired Sig Sauer to supply various weapons, including the MPX and MCX variants, as part of a larger order to US special operators, other unnamed US government agencies and unspecified foreign partners.

Copperhead, or a variant thereof, was Chick Sawyer's final submission to the SCW project, and various other entries had already been considered. That's not to say it won't face competition from some more entrants. The Czech Micro EVO 3 is heavier and has a longer barrel and overall length, but still meets military requirements.
The SCW-9, a late entrant from North Carolina-based Angstadt Arms, is shorter than the Copperhead and actually weighs less. Perhaps most importantly, it uses the same magazines as the Glock 17/19 pistols, which have developed a large following within the US military, particularly within the special operations community.
Of course, SCWs are meant for regular army units, so it doesn't matter that much. The service recently adopted Sig Sauer's M17 and M18 as its standard service pistols.
The Army's timeline for the program means at least several submissions must be cut early and the final guns could be in the hands of private security details as early as this year. So, it won't be long before we know whether or not the forces protecting VIPs will be carrying copperheads. Regardless, we're keeping an eye on where else these little accessory guns end up. The US saw submissions from HK, SIG Sauer, CZ, PTR and more; They were all considered, but eventually scrapped.
