small ruger 9mm

Small Ruger 9mm - When I set out to review this Ruger American Compact pistol, I wondered if the company could really innovate after settling into an established and predictable pattern. The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no.

Founded nearly 70 years ago, Sturm, Roger & Company is widely recognized as a manufacturer of superior quality, durable sporting firearms for your shooting needs. From hunting to self-defense, Roger makes a wide variety of rifles - many of which are prized for their rugged nature. But has the company reached a pre-production model?

Roger offers American Compact Handguns through a variety of channels, including your local gun store. I also recommend comparison shopping through our affiliate links to get the best price. I have personally used these companies and received good service.

When a new compact version of the Ruger 9mm American pistol was announced, I knew I wanted to check the gun out. The American pistol line promised a number of innovations, and I wanted to see Ruger do something special, or another run in the era of polymer-framed, bolt-action pistols.

I was very impressed with the presentation of the new Roger when it first appeared at my local dealership. While some guns ship in cardboard boxes without supporting accessories, this American pistol came in a nice, hard plastic case filled with extras.

Even if the customer is not consciously aware of it, presentation is important and has a lasting impact on customer satisfaction with the purchase. Introducing new products helped make Apple the technology giant it is today, and that's something Roger uses to his advantage.

The Roger American compact pistol I selected for review is chambered for the 9mm cartridge. 9mm has been very popular for decades and is widely recognized as suitable for self-defense.

The gun comes with a pair of magazines: 12 rounds that fit in the bottom of the grip and another extended magazine that holds 17 rounds of 9mm. Both magazine bodies are made of steel and coated with nickel-teflon. These magazines are corrosion resistant and allow for maneuverability both inside and outside the gun. Reloading is very fast. Also included with the rifle is a pink extended floor plate for the 12 round magazine.

Disassembling the weapon is very simple and does not require pulling the trigger. One simply removes the magazine and locks the rear slide. And you turn the takedown lever 45? Lower and remove the slide from the frame. The recoil spring is off, so you don't have to worry about shooting across the chamber when firing the rifle.

Roger chose Novak Low Mount Carry three-dot sights for the American Compact Pistol. For most people, this works well.

For defense, I prefer a front sight - preferably a bright, contrasting color - with a wide pointed back. It's easy for me to take a bold view - even a goal-oriented one. In a violent situation, I use whatever leverage I want and it works for me.

Three-dot sights are pretty much standard across the board, but I'm not sure they're the best, or even good, choice for a defensive weapon. However, Roger suggests what most people are comfortable with, and I would do the same if I were making the decision at the company.

The rear sight is tapered at the leading edge, which theoretically offers less chance of the cover rubbing off during draw and re-holstering. Regular readers will know that I like to have a solid front edge to the rear for one-handed slide manipulation.

For the casual shooter, this is not an important feature. For anyone who carries this gun professionally, I consider it a must. Most readers fall somewhere between the two extremes and decide for themselves whether or not this is a big deal. Stock hours are definitely worth it to vote where you need to.

Unlike some guns with interchangeable magazine releases, the Ruger American Compact 9mm pistol is truly versatile. There is a magazine release button and slide stop on either side of the frame. No need to call in a gunsmith, a gun will just work for anyone who can.

One version of the gun also has a finger safety. The Pro model, tested in this article, does not have a manual safety lever.

With its American pistol line, Ruger has implemented an interchangeable grip system so shooters can choose the right gun for their hands. Unlike the interchangeable back system found on some other rifles, the Ruger American Compact Pistol Grip uses an interchangeable piece that covers the back and sides of the frame.

To replace the grips, remove the rifle's slide assembly and locate the Torx screw head on the backstrap. Turn the screw 1/4 counterclockwise with the included Torx wrench. The catch can then be removed.

The grip will be visible in the frame, which is good for shooting. However, it can be a little difficult when you first try a different size.

For me, the small grip model worked best and I stuck with this Roger American Compact 9mm review. To prevent the modules from being accidentally damaged during storage, the company included module blocks that connect to the tool.

Picking up the gun for the first time, I was a little surprised at the weight. The weapon felt heavy and a subsequent check of its vital stats reinforced that belief.

Unloaded, the gun weighs approximately 29 ounces. For a 9mm compact pistol that uses a lot of polymer parts, I expected something lighter at 6-7 ounces. By comparison, the high-capacity Glock 19 Gen4 comes in at less than 24 ounces and the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact comes in at 25.9 ounces with a 15-round magazine.

Although the Roger American pistol has a very different look, the weight is reminiscent of the company's P-series pistols from the 80s and 90s. The P-series pistols are recognized as reliable performers, being a little on the large and heavy side. These rifles would go through several iterations before being completely replaced by Ruger's SR series pistols.

The weight looks up and forward, which makes sense: this is where most of the slide and the entire barrel are located. I think Roger designed this pistol to work in a constant + P bullet mode, so it's a relatively heavy weight piece. High-pressure ammo can wear out a gun quickly, so I wouldn't be surprised if the design needed some extra meat to ensure long-term durability.

Under the barrel, Roger included a Picatinny-type rail for adding a white light or laser. Even though this is a compact pistol, there seems to be enough rail space to handle the accessories you want to add.

I had a Streamlight TLR-4 G on hand that worked great with the rifle. The advantage of the TLR-4 G is that it gives you a bright white light and a green targeting laser. Other accessories from SureFire, Viridian and others should also work without issue.

There are also several companies currently making or planning to introduce holsters for Ruger American pistols.

One of the things associated with Roger is the idea that the company's guns are built like tanks. To be honest, this gun felt a little tanky, so I didn't feel sorry for it when I went to the range.

Because some rifles do better with a little break, I often start a rifle with a few hundred full metal jacket (FMJ) loads. FMJ bullets are easily fed through a hollow slot in a semi-automatic handgun.

Although the gun looked like a bullet, there was only one way to be sure of it. So at the range I came across a bag of ammunition and some test equipment. My goal was to determine if the Ruger American Pistol Compact would work as a personal defense weapon. In particular, I wanted to see if the gun was reliable, accurate and easy to control.

Review: Ruger 57 Semi Auto Pistol

Was not valid. I tested the gun with a variety of training and self-defense ammo. Roger got through it all without a problem. I value reliability as the most important feature for a self-defense weapon.

The accuracy of this pistol was also very good. The first five shot balls I shot with this gun were less than 1.5 inches. Not bad, he had never fired a gun before. Once I settled down
