sig p320 .22lr

Sig P320 22lr - No, the new SIG SAUER .22LR pistol - the P322 - is not a P320. But you'd be forgiven if you got it wrong at first glance. When SIG set out to fill the rim hole in their handgun lineup, they didn't choose to let another company make a new gun for them. Instead, unlike other entrants into the rimfire pistol field, SIG embarked on a 15-month effort to design and build the new P322. Even the magazines for the P322 are made in the USA.

It's clear that SIG engineers had competitors' pistols in mind when defining the new design because they matched or surpassed them, providing all the features that customers are looking for in a semi-automatic rimfire pistol today. However, the P322's impressive 20+1 magazine capacity gets the most attention, surpassing almost everything else.

Finally, what SIG has come up with is perhaps the most complete .22LR semi-auto pistol on the market.

It's not hard to spot the SIG family resemblance in the P322. The new rimfire pistol features many design cues from the P320 and P365. However, unlike the aforementioned assault rifles, the rimfire P322 is a new design from the ground up, using a stainless steel frame and a finely serrated hard-coated anodized aluminum slide.

Unlike the P320 and P365, the P322 has a non-modular design. The lighting control unit cannot be removed by the user and dropped into another handle frame.

With its four-inch barrel, the P322 closely resembles the P320 compact assault rifle. But it's not a machine gun. The P322 is a muzzle-operated, hammer-concealed, single-action pistol. And unlike most rimfire weapons, you can safely fire as many times as you want.

The P322 grip is slightly smaller than that of a standard P320, with the same grip found on standard models of that pistol and the P365. With the included P322 small trigger, almost any hand-sized shooter can get a good, full grip on a lightweight .22 pistol and be more than cool with the shot.

Unfortunately, Jeremy didn't have the P320 when he took the photo above, but this is the P322 (with barrel adapter) on the left, the P365 XL in the middle, and the regular P365 on the right. In case you're wondering, the P322 doesn't work in a P320 case. SIG will sell holsters for the gun, and third-party holster manufacturers will also exchange them.

SIG ships the P322 with two standard USA-made 20-round magazines, giving the gun a 20+1 round capacity. This means more time to shoot and less reloading, which everyone appreciates, but until recently we've had too few rimfire pistols.

If 21 rounds weren't enough, SIG hopes to start shipping an expanded 25-round magazine in a few weeks (they also offer 10 rounds for you poor people living in low-capacity states).

SIG was a little tight-lipped about the cost of the extra cores, but it looks like the 20-round cards will cost around $29.95 and the 25-round extended cores will be around $34.95. Or about you.

Again, SIG was not aware of the competition when they designed this gun. The P322's closest rivals, the FN 502 Tactical and the Taurus TX22, hold 15 and 16 rounds, respectively. A similar GLOCK 44 can only hold 10 rounds. Yes, the KelTec CP33 holds 33 rounds, but the gun is its own beast and cannot be directly compared to a SIG, FN, Taurus, or even a GLOCK.

The SIG includes a pocket to help slide the loading tabs down while loading the magazine. That's fine, but in my experience, after loading dozens of P322 mags, the only time you'll likely need a magazine is if your hand strength is reduced or your fingers are very heavy.

The tabs on both sides of the drop tracker make it very easy to load P322 magazines up to 20 rounds (we haven't seen a 25 round magazine yet).

SIG has provided the P322 with a nice green fiber optic sight. The front sight is fixed, the rear sight can be adjusted according to the height and wind direction.

But wait... the really cool kids use optics on their guns these days, don't they? You can be sure.

SIG is well aware of this trend, which is why they incorporated an optical cut-out into the P322 aluminum slide that holds the RMSc and, of course, the SIG ROMEAZero micro red dot reflex sights.

While the irons are excellent, the P322 offers a really good platform if you're new to the pistol red marks and want to get more comfortable.

As the only functional design they cover, the P322 has frame protection. All controls are fully ambidextrous.

Although the P322 is not modular, its trigger is. The SIG P322 comes loaded with the increasingly popular flat shoe. But if you're a stickler for a traditional trigger, SIG includes one of these too, with a tool to change them (though you can easily do the job without a tool).

Whichever pair you use, the P322 trigger breaks cleanly and resets short, very responsive and audible. It's a recipe for fun through quick, regular seed dumps.

Removal is as easy as any thug weapon. Relock the slide, rotate the release lever and push up and over the fixed P322 cylinder.

The barrel of the P322 has chain protection. Remove and attach the next barrel adapter to add what you want.

SIG includes a barrel adapter that goes with the gun so you can suppress fire your P322 like the polite, civilized gun owner we know you are.

As should be obvious by now, the P322 is a full body pistol to say the least. It has almost everything you would expect from a modern peripheral PC. But that doesn't mean anything unless it's reliable, and it's a stick, some rimfire semi-auto pistols have trouble cleaning.

SIG told us that they put the P322 through the same reliability testing as their service pistols, not that anyone expects these rimfire pistols to be used that way. The P322 is said to have run 24,000 rounds and counting, including 5,000 dry fires.

Sig P320 22lr

I shot the hell out of the P322 at a press event, putting well over 1,000 rounds through a number of guns, and during that time, one of them was downright abused.

Sig P322 Review: An Almost Good 22lr Pistol

We split our group into three groups and shoot eight levels of steel challenges. The other two soldiers brought some weapons. Of course, our five teams fired all eight shots and only used one shot at a time to see if they could fail. He didn't do that.

As you know, rimfire weapons tend to suffer from rimfire ammunition. It's not the most reliable ammo and it's dirty as hell.

One of the things SIG did to increase the reliability of the P322 was to rifle the chamber. This is the same as some HK pistols (such as the P7 and MP5). The blower redirects some of the high-pressure gas between the housing and the chamber to help blow out the empty cans. This is especially important for rimfire ammunition.

Does that work? Apparently. See the issues above when shooting with the P322. You can see carbon marks that indicate the pipes are working as designed.

The Sig P322 And Why 2022 Is The Year Of The .22lr

During the eight-stage iron challenge, out of hundreds of rounds shot by five of us (we used CCI Mini-Mags), we only had one malfunction. Upon closer inspection, the failure was due to a misfire...not unusual for rimfire ammunition. Obviously, considering the number of rounds through it, that's far less than you'd expect from a typical performance level of a rimfire weapon, even with the best stuff like Mini-Mags.

We really just found a way to prevent the P322 from exploding every time we pull the trigger. . .

If you drop the magazine follower all the way and put rounds in it, the gun can sometimes nose and fire (top left). If this happens, the bad round will not enter the chamber when it reaches the top of the stack. This is easily secured by depressing the loading tabs and pressing the core onto the surface.

Sig P320 22lr

The good news is that user error can only be made once. It's easily avoided by dropping the follower just enough to only load one round at a time. If you do this, the line will wrap perfectly every time (top right) and you will have no feeding problems.

Of course not. During the thousands of rounds fired at the press event, we did not have a single case of rim lock. The magazines naturally roll around as you carry them, and that works really well.
